How to Measure a Garage Door Torsion Spring

Measure the wire diameter

With the spring fully unwound, push 20 coils tightly together and measure that length in inches. Divide by 20 for the wire diameter. Measuring 20 coils rather than one removes most of the error — and a 0.010″ mistake changes the torque significantly.

Example: 20 coils measuring 5.25″ ÷ 20 = 0.262″ wire.

Read the inside diameter

The inside diameter is normally stamped or cast into the stationary or winding cone — look for 1.75, 175 or P175. If the marking is unreadable, measure across the inside of the coil.

Measure the coil length

Measure the coil body only, excluding the cones, with the spring relaxed. If the spring is broken, slide the two halves together end to end and add the sections to get the original length.

Identify the wind direction

Look at the coil end nearest the winding cone. If the wire end points clockwise away from you it is one hand, counter-clockwise the other — or simply read the cone colour: black for left-wound, red for right-wound.

Does this set include both a left-wound and a right-wound spring?

Yes. The pair ships as one left-wound spring (black cone, mounts on the right side of the shaft) and one right-wound spring (red cone, mounts on the left side).
