Is This the Right Side? Left Wound Explained

Torsion springs come in two hands that mirror each other. A left-wound spring goes on the right side of the center bracket, viewed from inside the garage looking out. It is normally fitted with a black winding cone, the industry color for a left-wound spring. Ordering the wrong hand is the most common mistake with single springs: it will not wind correctly on that side.

On a two-spring door, also check the spring on the other side. If it is the same age, replacing both together keeps the door balanced. The 243 x 2″ x 32″ matched pair covers both sides in one order.

Will This Spring Fit My Door?

  • Wire diameter measures 0.243″ critical
  • Inside diameter measures 2″ critical
  • Unwound coil length measures 32″ critical
  • The spring you are replacing is left-wound and sits on the right side critical
  • Cable drums, torsion shaft and bearings are in serviceable condition

How to Measure a Garage Door Torsion Spring

1

Measure the wire diameter

With the spring fully unwound, push 20 coils tightly together and measure that length in inches, then divide by 20. Measuring 20 coils instead of one removes most of the error, and a 0.010″ mistake changes the torque significantly. A spring measurement gauge makes this faster.

Example: 20 coils measuring 4.86″ ÷ 20 = 0.243″ wire.

2

Read the inside diameter

The inside diameter is normally stamped or cast into the winding or stationary cone. Look for 2, 200 or P200. If the marking is unreadable, measure across the inside of the coil.

3

Measure the coil length

Measure the coil body only, excluding the cones, with the spring relaxed. If the spring is broken, push the two halves together and add the sections.

4

Identify the wind direction

Look at the coil end nearest the winding cone, or read the cone color: black for left-wound, red for right-wound. Standing inside the garage facing the door, a left-wound spring mounts on the right side of the center bracket and a right-wound spring on the left.

Safety Warning: Professional Installation Strongly Recommended

Garage door torsion springs store enough energy to cause severe injury or death. A 0.243″ spring at full tension must be handled with the correct tools.

  • Use correctly sized steel winding bars only. Never substitute screwdrivers, rebar, ratchet extensions or pliers.
  • Disconnect the opener and secure the door fully closed before starting.
  • Calculate the correct number of winding turns for your door. Do not guess.
  • Never stand directly in front of, or in line with, a spring under tension.

If you are not trained and equipped for torsion spring work, have a qualified garage door technician carry out the replacement.

Signs a Torsion Spring Needs Replacing

Visible gap

A 2 to 3″ gap in the coil means the spring has snapped.

Loud bang

A sharp report from the garage, often mistaken for a gunshot.

Door feels heavy

Hard or impossible to lift by hand with the opener released.

Opens a few inches

The door rises 6 to 8″, then the opener reverses or stalls.

Slams shut

The door closes faster than normal or drops the last stretch.

Crooked travel

One side lags, or a cable has gone slack or jumped its drum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which side does a left-wound spring go on?

The right side. Stand inside the garage facing the door: a left-wound spring mounts on the right of the center bracket. It is usually fitted with a black winding cone.

Should I replace one spring or both?

If your door has two springs of the same age, replace both. The surviving spring has worn at the same rate and usually fails soon after the first. The 243 x 2″ x 32″ matched pair costs less than two separate orders of effort.

What does “243 x 2 x 32” mean?

Wire diameter 0.243″, inside diameter 2″, and an unwound coil length of 32″. All three, plus the wind direction, must match the spring you are replacing.

Can I fit this spring myself?

We strongly recommend a trained technician. Correctly sized steel winding bars are mandatory and the spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury.

How is it shipped?

It ships by FedEx, or you can collect it from our Sacramento or Santa Clara store. See our shipping policy for current rates and dispatch times.

Why Choose This Left-Wound Torsion Spring

Matched exactly to your old spring, this 243 x 2″ x 32″ left-wound spring restores the counterbalance on the right side of your door, so the door lifts evenly and the opener is not left to make up the difference.
